15 million girls marry before the age of 18 each year
If we don’t act now, more than 140 million girls will become child brides by 2020. Child marriage is a violation of children’s human rights. Despite being prohibited by international law, it continues to rob millions of girls under 18 around the world of their childhood. Early marriage denies girls their right to make vital decisions about their sexual health and well-being. It forces them out of education and into a life of poor prospects, with increased risk of violence, abuse, ill health or early death. Ending child marriage requires a broad range of solutions that work together to change cultural norms. These solutions include: educating and empowering girls, changing culture, changing laws as well as changing hearts and minds. This short video explains the dreadful consequences of early marriage.
